The West Coast

So I left Queenstown on Friday 16th (after some jetboating - chek out shotover jet, code shjt805161104977)
I headed to Haast via Haast Pass and spent the night at Haast wilderness lodge

Gates of Haast

Saturday 17th Haast to Fox glacier

I headed back up to the pass to see every waterfall between the pass and Haast itself. Fantail falls,

Thunder falls (aka 90ft falls)

Roaring billy

As well as hiking up the hill above the pass itself to see where I'd been and where I was going to.

View from the top of the Haast Pass viewpoint

From there I stopped at Ship creek (and spent ages watching hector dolphins that I'd missed in Porpoise bay) playing in the surf - it made my day - I took some video, but the resolution just isn't good enough to see them.

and Knights point for some great views up the coast.

Stopped in Fox glacier township for the night.

Sunday 18th- Fox glacier
Spent the day hiking on the glacier

The Glacier goes up the valley and around the corner to the right from here - you can just make out a tiny bit of it showing at the top of the valley

Ice Cave - we were able to climb all the way through this cave and out the other side

Ice cave/crevasse that we could climb through

Jeff - Our Guide for the day - he tried to make steps for us when necessary to make the walking a little easier

Monday 19th Fox to Hokitika
Pretty much just driving today, stopped at the bushman's museum in Pukekura the offering of the day was possum pie... my stomach just wasn't up to it!

Hokitika and dinner from Indian Family - watched sunset over the beach,

Tuesday 20th Hokitika Gorge, Lake Kaniere, pancake rocks

Hokitika Gorge - the water really is the colour of a blue raspberry ice pop!

Lake Kaniere Pancake Rocks - the local cafe offers as it's most popular dish...pancakes of course!

Wednesday 21st Drive to Hanmer springs via Arthurs pass stayed at Le gite

Thursday 22nd Horse riding for the first time in 10ish years, and then soaking in the hot springs at Hanmer - I needed it to soak away all the aches from riding!

Friday 23rd drive to Nelson and on to Motueka stayed at the laughing kiwi

Satuday 24th - kayaking the able Tasman and the Tonga marine reserve - the seals were adorable!

Sunday 25th drive to Nelson, get lost on the back roads around Able Tasman, and on to Picton stayed at Sequoia lodge - free chocolate pudding and ice cream every evening.

Monday 26th- ferry to wellington night at Moana lodge. The ferry crossing was dreadful - so no pictures of Marlborough sounds which are really very pretty, and the water can be a beautiful blue/green colour... I was to busy staring at the horizon, and reminding myself that even though the fog was getting thicker and thicker, the horizon wasn't really moving!

Tuesday 27th north along the surf highway through New Plymouth to Te Kuite
The Surf Highway

sad to hear about Molly going, but glad you got it sold. The pictures of your trip were wonderful. I especially liked the one of you in the ice hole.
